The BSWP Service Learning and Inquiry initiative is supported by a generous donation from philanthropist Dottie Stimpson. The initiative is designed to incorporate service learning into undergraduate education at BSU, into mentoring programs for new teachers, and PD for established readers, and to implement service learning, as a sustainable part and parcel of core curriculum, into classes and schools in the Boise School District.

The implementation model used is that of inquiry curriculum, since inquiry is how experts learn, is the most powerful model of teaching and learning (according to the lsat 30 years of research in cognitive science as well as disaggregations by teaching treatment of major national and international databases), and is a natural way to implement curriculum meeting the new Common Core State Standards.

The initiative involves 12 months of intern and mentor collaboration in designing and delivering service learning as part of the inquiry process around important curricular topics.
